Glendale teen drowns in Boulder Bay

A holiday weekend turned tragic Dec. 17 when a Glendale man drowned while kayaking in Boulder Bay.
Karapet Aslanyan fell into the freezing water at approximately 12:30 p.m. after the kayak he was in flipped over. The 19-year-old Aslanyan was reportedly staying in a cabin in Boulder Bay with friends. According to witnesses at the scene, Aslanyan was not wearing a life jacket or wet suit.
The temperature of the water at the time or the accident was estimated between 35 and 39 degrees.
Members of the Municipal Water District Lake Patrol and Big Bear Lake Fire Department searched the bay by boat. Divers from the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department were brought in by helicopter to aid in the search.
Aslanyan was transported to Bear Valley Community Hospital and then transferred to Loma Linda University Medical Center in critical condition. Attempts to revive him were not successful and he was pronounced dead at 4:32 p.m.
The San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department is investigating the incident.
