Extra match not a problem
Big Bear’s girls golf team played a surprise match last week, one of three the Lady Bears won.
Ramona High School’s golf team arrived at the Bear Mountain Golf Course Sept. 10 ready to play, said Bears coach Chris Leong. Ramona said Big Bear was on its schedule, but the school is missing from the Bears’ calendar. No problem, the two teams squared off, with the Lady Bears soundly defeating the Lady Rams.
Big Bear’s Claire Hird shot a 49, her best match of the season thus far, Leong said. Ramona was a nonleague match.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Bears opened league play defeating Desert Hot Springs 288-324 on Sept. 9 to start the season. Michelle Hirschler led the way, carding a 50. Leong said Hirschler shot a 45, but each player added five strokes to their scores due to construction on the second hole.
Big Bear was scheduled to play two league matches in one day against Desert Mirage Sept. 11, but weather put a kink in the plans. Big Bear won the first nine-hole round 308-325. As the players took to the course for the second nine holes a huge wind storm blew across the Coachella Valley, Leong said. Winds howled at 50 mph and the storm looked like fog as it blew in, he said. The wind smelled like sulfur, Leong said.
The coaches jumped in carts to pull the players off the course and the match will be rescheduled.
Katy Callaway and Hird were the leaders in the first round against Desert Mirage, Leong said. Rookie Kalley Campuzano shot a 62 and is playing well, Leong said. She shot a 61 against Ramona.
The Lady Bears were scheduled to face Ramona in a second match on Sept. 15 and travel to Rubidoux High School to resume Mountain Pass League play Sept. 16. The first home match for Big Bear is Thursday, Sept. 18, against Beaumont. Tee time is at 3 p.m.
