Beaumont’s girls golf team is tough. The Lady Cougars handed the Lady Bears their first loss of the season Sept. 18.
Big Bear lost to Beaumont 258-276, but carded some good scores, Bears coach Chris Leong said. Michelle Hirschler shot a 48 to lead the Lady Bears, followed by Claire Hird who carded a 49. Katy Callaway shot a 57.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Bears added two more W’s to the win column to improve to 5-1 overall, 3-1 in league play. Big Bear defeated Ramona High School in a nonleague match on Sept. 15. The teams tied at 283, but the Lady Bears earned the victory on Callaway’s score, Leong said. Callaway’s 64 was better than Ramona’s sixth player’s 69.
In high school, the five best or lowest scores are counted for the total. In the case of the tie, the sixth player’s score is used.
Hirschler carded a 51 against Ramona, and Hird had a 52. Kalley Campuzano shot a 57 for the Lady Bears.
On Sept. 16, the Bears played Rubidoux High School at the Indian Hills Golf Course. Hirschler continued to play well, carding a 46 on the tough course. The Lady Bears won the match 287-366. Leong said Rubidoux’s golf program is brand new.
Hird finished with a 56, Callaway shot a 59 and Campuzano finished with a 61 on the day.
Despite the loss to Beaumont, the Lady Bears remain in the hunt for the Mountain Pass League title. Leong said his team improved and that’s good. Campuzano is playing well as a first year player. Her scores are competitive, Leong said.
The Lady Bears were scheduled to host Heritage High School Sept. 23 then travel to San Jacinto on Sept. 26. They face Beaumont once more in October.
