Arctic Circles closes because of rock slides and flooding, July 11, 2018

Heavy rain and flooding on Highway 18 in the Arctic Circle between the Bear Valley Dam and Snow Valley has resulted in rock slides and a road closure.

UPDATE 1:45 p.m. — Arctic Circle now open. The California Highway Patrol is escorting vehicles through. The rock slide debris has been removed. No injuries were reported, but motorists are advised to use caution due to increased flash flood potential.


At approximately 11:37 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, a rock slide was reported in the Arctic Circle area of Highway 18 west of Bear Valley Dam.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the Arctic Circle is shut down from Snow Valley to the Bear Valley Dam. A vehicle is also reportedly stuck because of a huge boulder underneath the car.The vehicle is stuck at Lakeview Point.

Both lanes are blocked with rocks.

Heavy rain and flooding exists in the area. A Sigalert has been issued. CHP will start clearing out vehicles once the road is shut down.

Also, Highway 38 remains closed between Angelus Oaks and Bryant Street in Yucaipa. The only open route available off the mountain at this time is Highway 18 through Lucerne Valley.
