Big Bear Lake City Council/Improvement Agency board meets Monday, Aug. 9, at 6:30 p.m.
Items on the agenda for discussion and possible action include an application by the Old Miners Association to use a portion of the Bartlett Parking Lot for Outhouse Races on Saturday, Aug. 28. The event is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and pits teams racing handmade outhouses through the parking lot on a designed course. Staff recommends approval of the application.
Also on the agenda is a request of the Improvement Agency and the city to allocate up to $135,000 to cover event expenses for the 2011 Amgen Tour of California. Big Bear Lake is applying to be a host city for a stage finish again in 2011. The upfront budget allocation is to allow the Big Bear Events office to proceed with the application process.
Last year, the city, San Bernardino County, Big Bear Lake Resort Association and the Big Bear Chamber of Commerce entered into a memorandum of understanding for the funding for the stage finish in Big Bear. The chamber was the designated sponsorship arm. This type of partnership is expected for the 2011 event, which would limit the actual cost to each agency at $35,000.
The Improvement Agency board and City Council are the same people, but the funding for each is separate. The IA and city are expected to allocate funds for the tour.
Also on Aug. 9, the IA board considers establishing a small businesses direct load program and hears an update on the sign improvement program.
The meeting is at City Hall and is open to the public. Big Bear Lake City Hall is at 39707 Big Bear Blvd., Big Bear Lake.
