Caltrans is lighting up the Arctic Circle. Working in collaboration with the California Highway Patrol, Caltrans is installing nine daylight headlight section signs at various locations on Highway 18 between Highway 138 (Crestline Cutoff) and the Bear Valley Dam.

The new regulation is designed to enhance safety for mountain drivers. According to a Caltrans press release, daylight headlight sections result in increased detection and conspicuity of oncoming vehicles. “This came up last year at the Mountain Community Preparedness meeting,” Caltrans spokesperson Terri Kasinga said. “We did some investigation to see if the road met the criteria for it.”
