About 50 people listened and asked a few questions of Jay Obernolte and Mike Morrell on April 16. The message was one they were familiar with.

Pay the fire fee, file a petition of redetermination, which is a protest, and support the fight to have the fee repealed, and oh by the way, these two state legislators believe the fee is really an illegal tax.

State Assemblyman Obernolte and State Senator Morrell hosted a town hall meeting at the Big Bear Area Regional Wastewater Agency conference room to discuss the fee and fire insurance. Obernolte hosted a similar meeting a year ago and was joined at that time by Board of Equalization member George Runner.

The Fire Prevention Fee is assessed annually on all habitable structures within State Responsibility Areas. The fee is $152.33, having increased due to an inflation index. It increases annually. Properties located within the SRA that are also within the boundaries of a local fire agency are subject to a $35 annual discount. All habitable structures within the unincorporated areas of Big Bear Valley are subject to the fee. The city of Big Bear Lake is not within the SRA as an incorporated city.
