On June 30, 16 Big Bear residents marched along Big Bear Boulevard in solidarity with over 750 “Families Belong Together” marches across the nation that drew millions of protesters. Americans are heartbroken and outraged that the US government is forcibly taking babies and children away from their parents at the border and locking them up in cages in internment camps around the country, while detaining and often deporting the parents. These families are seeking a better life in America and many are seeking asylum from horrific conditions in their home countries. Many of the babies are very young and were still breast feeding. I would like to say this inhumane policy is unAmerican, but we have an ugly history of separating children from their parents. Slaves and Native Americans suffered this torture. When Japanese Americans were interned during WW2 at least families were allowed to stay together.
Crossing the border illegally is a misdemeanor. The Obama era Family Case Management Program had a 99 percent success rate and did not separate or detain families. Trump ended it last year and refers to it as “catch and release.”
Children everywhere in the world must be loved and nurtured, never tortured. It breaks my heart to see this happening in America. We can have a better future. I care. Do you?
