I recently received word of the death of a Big Bear High School alumnus, Nick Newsome. This is a young man whom I first met when he was a toddler and covered through high school sports.

In 1965 I was 11 years old. 1968 I was a ninth-grader. In both instances I was a child really, watching history unfold in the story of race and civil rights and unrest in this country in what was considered then modern times.

Guilty pleasures. We all have them, even if we don’t admit to one or any in public. Those guilty pleasures can be anything from a favorite dessert, music, collection or a literary genre. Most people have more than one.

It’s horse time. The weather is warm, and yes, chances are there will be another cold snap, but it’s spring. The cold snap will be short-lived and move on quickly. Sorry, Boston and the rest of the East Coast.
