Baseball

The Bears split the week, going 1-1 in Cross Valley League play. On March 14, the Bears beat Silver Valley 11-3 after taking a 5-0 lead through the first two innings.

Sophomore James Ellsberry went 5-for-5 at the plate, scoring five runs. Senior David Ybarra was 3-for-4 with one run. 

Junior Tanner Gump got the start and the win, going 4.2 innings.

On March 15, the Bears dropped a 3-0 decision to Excelsior Charter in Victorville.

The Bears are 5-3 overall and 2-1 in Cross Valley League play. They play at University Prep Tuesday, March 19.

Excelsior Charter improved to 6-3 and 2-0 in league. Riverside Prep is 1-0, University Prep is 1-1, Silver Valley is 1-2, Academy for Academic Excellence is 0-1 and CIMS is 0-2 in league standings.

Softball

The Lady Bears improved to 2-0 in league play with a 12-0 win over Excelsior Charter March 15 in Victorville.

Sophomore pitcher Lexie Duran threw her second career no-hitter. The Lady Bears broke open the game in the top of the third with a six-run inning.

Big Bear has a nonleague doubleheader at Hesperia High School Saturday, March 16. The Lady Bears are back in league play Tuesday, March 19, at University Prep. The Lady Bears are at Silver Valley on March 21.

Track and field

Big Bear’s boys and girls track teams won the first Cross Valley League cluster meet of the season. 

The Bears scored 179 points, beating Excelsior Charter by 30 points. The Lady Bears edged the Academy for Academic Excellence 196-180 for the CVL win. Other schools competing included Riverside Prep, Silver Valley, Lucerne Valley, Academy for Academic Excellence and University Careers & Sports Academy.

In the boys competition, Big Bear first-place finishers included Anthony Forrest in the 110-meter hurdles (14.89), Austin Piperno in the discus (109-06), and Paul Domingue in the high jump (5-10) and triple jump (39-04).

In the girls competition, Big Bear first-place finishers included Hailey McGivney in the 800-meter run (2:35.02), Kaia Hoak in the 1600-meter run (5:51.79), Elizabeth Huefner in the 100-meter hurdles (16.91) and 300-meter hurdles (52.36), and the 4X400 relay team of McGivney, Hoak, Maggie Kubeja and Taylor Johnson (4:53.96).

Big Bear competes in the San Gorgonio Relays Saturday, March 16 in San Bernardino.

Boys golf

The Bears finished second in the second Cross Valley League cluster match March 14 at the Hesperia Golf Club.

University Prep’s Andrew Acosta, the defending CVL champion, fired a 33 to maintain his lead in the individual competition. Big Bear’s top finisher was Ryan Flanders, who scored a 45.

Excelsior kept its lead in the team competition with a team score of 239 to improve to 14-0. Big Bear was second with a 253, and a CVL record of 12-2. University Prep was third at 288. Hesperia Christian was fourth at 344 and Lucerne Valley was fifth at 363.

Standings after two matches: 1, Excelsior 14-0; 2, Big Bear 12-2; 3, University Prep 9-5; 4, Hesperia Christian 7-7; 5, Lucerne Valley 5-9; 6, ACE 5-9; 7(tie), CIMS and Riverside Prep 0-14.
