Just when you thought it was summer vacation, there is a back-to-school notice for at least some Big Bear High School students. That’s right. Fall sports teams are gearing up for the season.

Practice starts for football and cross-country teams Monday, July 16. The high school volleyball program hosts a free camp beginning Monday, July 16.

The Big Bear High School football team begins regular practice at 5 p.m. on July 16. The Bears, defending CIF champions and two-time winners of the Cross Valley League, went 13-2 in 2017. Among the top returning players from that team are seniors Daniel Jett, Zack Bernard and Matthew Stillwell. All three were all-CIF selections as juniors.

The Bears, who move up from Division 12 to Division 9 in 2018, open the 2018 season on the road Aug. 17 at California Military Institute. Other road games are Aug. 31 at Laguna Beach, Sept. 14 at Rialto, Oct. 19 at Silver Valley and Oct. 26 at Excelsior Charter. Home games are Aug. 25 against Twentynine Palms, Sept. 7 against Nuview Bridge, Sept. 22 against Boron (homecoming), Sept. 29 versus Rio Hondo Prep and Oct. 6 against Riverside Prep. The Nuview Bridge game is a special Friday Night Lights game.

Prior to the season opener, the Bears host Yucca Valley in a scrimmage at on Aug. 11.

The Big Bear High School boys and girls cross-country teams start official practice at 4:30 p.m. July 16 at Minder Field. Both teams are defending Cross Valley League champions. The program hosts the sixth annual Bob Randle Alumni race July 25 at Snow Summit at 6 p.m. The start and finish is near the Pine Knot Campground.

Big Bear’s cross-country teams also host the annual Conquer the Wall mile climb at Snow Summit on Aug. 11. The season officially begins for the Bears on Sept. 1 at the Fastback Shootout in Arcadia.

The free volleyball camp is July 16-20, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the Big Bear High School gym. Tryouts for the varsity and junior varsity teams are the following week, July 23-27, at the same time and place.

The Lady Bears open the 2018 season Aug. 13 at home against Granite Hills. First serve for varsity is at 5:30 p.m.

Girls golf and tennis teams begin practice on the first day of school, Aug. 2. The golf team opens the season Aug. 20 against Rancho Mirage at 2 p.m. at Bear Mountain Golf Course. The tennis team opens the season on the road Aug. 20 at Desert Hot Springs.
