Derek Carpenter just happened to be online when registration opened for the 2019 Holcomb Valley Trail Run. That earned him the No. 1 bib for the June 15 event in Big Bear.

Carpenter sent the registration link to his friends, and they all signed up as well, earning bibs 2, 3 and for the self-called slacker 150.

The Holcomb Valley Trail Run takes hearty runners/walkers/hikers along the trails above Big Bear Valley on the north side of the lake. Three distances are available, 33, 15 and 7 miles.

Carpenter competed for the second year in the 33-mile run. “Why not, it’s here,” Carpenter said when asked why he was going the longer distance. The 2018 event was his first time running 33 miles. He said it was fun, so he came back for more. Asked how he did in 2018, “Not well,” Carpenter replied. The 41-year-old from Pasadena finished the 2019 run in 8 hours, 38 minutes, 55.988 seconds. He wanted to better his time from 2018, and Carpenter did just that. His 2018 time was 9:18:26.
