Here they come

A P-38 Lightning lands at Big Bear Airport during the Big Bear Air Fair in 2011. The 16th Big Bear Air Fair will bring dozens of planes, vendors and attractions to the Big Bear Valley Aug. 24.

The Big Bear Airport staff hope to give Big Bear Valley residents and visitors a tour of aviation history from 1903 to the present. The Big Bear Air Fair is set for the end of August.

The airport will play host to dozens of planes, cars, vendors and hundreds of people when the gates open for the 16th Big Bear Air Fair Aug. 24. The public is allowed to enter the airport at 7 a.m. to browse the vendors, but the opening ceremony doesn’t begin until 9 a.m. Admission to the Air Fair, which runs until 4 p.m., is $2.

The Air Fair’s opening ceremony will kick off with the presentation of the colors by the Big Bear Valley Composite Squadron 6750 Civil Air Patrol. The Mountain Fife and Drums group, from Lake Arrowhead, will follow the Civil Air Patrol. The highlight of the ceremony will be the Just in Time Skydivers, a team specializing in stunts and public events.

The theme for this year’s Air Fair is “Celebrating 110 Years of Flight,” a nod to the anniversary of the first manned flight by the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, at Kitty Hawk, N.C., in 1903.
