It was an early call for the 20th annual Holcomb Valley Trail Run. Nearly everyone who registered for the 33-, 15- and 7-mile runs showed up at the start. Not everyone finished.

The 2016 Holcomb Valley Trail Run features a rocky journey up the Cougar Crest Trail, and a high elevation that taxes even the hardiest of runners. Athletes came from as far away as New York, Massachusetts, Washington state and Hawaii to take the challenge.

Abel Clutter of Mesa, Arizona, won the men's 7-mile run in 57 minutes, 35 seconds. Beth Weber of Aliso Viejo, California, won the women's 7-mile run in 1:12:41.

Jose Paredes of Sylmar took home the top prize in the men's 15-mile run, finishing the grueling course in 1:55:29. Sergey Shumko of Big Bear City finished second. Carrie Nofziger of Costa Mesa won the women's 15-mile run in 2:23:50.

Tony Torre of Cedar Glen beat out the field of 40 runners to win the men's 33-mile race in 4:18:00. Jade Belzberg of Coronado won the women's 33-mile run in 5:38:01.
